Activities

We host a range of activities at Rawdon Community Library. Browse through what’s on offer below and if you like what you see, turn up! New members are always welcome.

Coffee Mornings and Afternoons

Everyone is invited to our friendly coffee mornings held in the main library every Tuesday at 10.30am – 12.pm and 1.30am to 3pm. We ask for a £3.00 donation in return for coffee, tea and biscuits. A great way to meet new people, chat with friends, relax and warm up when the weather’s cold; our coffee mornings are the best way to start your day! If you need a lift to get here, we may be able to help. Please get in touch via telephone, social media, email or by visiting us at the library. All our contact details are at the bottom of the page.

French Conversation

Meeting on alternate Wednesday mornings from 11am – 12pm, participants in French Conversation converse in French about anything to do with France. Some French (even if rather rusty) would be ideal. Topics range from food, to culture, to current affairs, in fact anything the group decides. Grammar and vocabulary revision is conducted when the need arises. We ask for a contribution of £3.00 per session which goes towards supporting the Library.

Gardening Group

Do you enjoy gardening? Do you know a lot and would like to share your knowledge? Do you know very little but would like to learn? If so, please join us in the library on the second Monday in the month from 2pm to 4pm.The group makes occasional visits to gardens so please check at the library counter. £3.00 per session includes refreshments.

Local History Group

The group meets on the last Thursday of every month at 10.30 am. A new local history group has been set up at Rawdon Library for research using resources available in the library’s own Aireborough and Yorkshire Collections and also online. The group has put on two exhibitions of old photographs and postcards of Rawdon and more are planned in the future – for Guiseley and Yeadon as well. We also have other events: visits to local historical buildings, speakers, historical walks in Aireborough. You would be very welcome to join us. £3.00 per session and enjoy a free cup of tea / coffee and biscuits.

Needle Crafts

The group meet every 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month between 1.45 p.m. and 4.00 p.m. An informal, friendly group of people who gather together to exchange ideas and skills in knitting, crocheting, quilting, embroidery and any other form of needlecrafts. As a group we have helped a local Brownie Company assist their members in the pursuit of craft badges. We all contribute £3.00 per session and enjoy a free cup of tea / coffee and a biscuit or two and of course a chat! Please note: There may be a waiting list for this popular group. Please check at library counter.

Railway Interest Group

This active and friendly group meets on the 3rd Monday of every month 2 – 4pm. The group mainly looks at Yorkshire railways meeting in the local history room so old books and maps can be consulted. There are occasional trips out too, such as the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, East Lancashire Light Railway. A wide range of talks and topics are on offer during the winter months with trips planned for the summer seasons. As always, the fee is £3.00 per session and a complimentary cup of tea / coffee with biscuits.

Book  Group

The Book Group meets on the third Thursday of every month from 1.30 – 3.00 pm at the Library. Members are a friendly bunch and the atmosphere is very informal. For example, if you haven’t got round to reading the chosen book by the next meeting it’s absolutely not a problem! Books are chosen by common consent. Normally it is expected that all participants read the same book however, it is not out of the question for us to read different books or, if all members have enjoyed a particular book, we might all read a different title by the same author. There are no rules! We ask for a contribution of £3.00 per session which goes towards supporting the Library.

Scrabble is a board game for 2 to 4 players using 100 letter tiles to make words on a board of 225 squares. Devised in 1938 by an American Alfred Butts. Scrabble was little known until 1952 when the president of Macy’s department store in New York came across the game whilst on holiday and placed an order for his store. Over 150million sets have been sold and there are around 4,000 scrabble clubs and the game is played at all levels. The library’s scrabble club welcomes players of all abilities. It meets the first Monday of every month from 2pm to 4pm. Contribution of £3 which includes tea or coffee.
